The Project

For the UX minor course HCI Mastery and Seductive Design our class received a design case from the Dutch Brain Foundation.

Ommetje is an app that was developed by them to get people to walk every day. The app became a big success but overtime they noticed that the number of daily users was decreasing.

The foundation wanted to expand their daily user base under 40 and gave us the task to redesign their Ommetje app to reach their goal.

The Problem

The Dutch brain foundation wants to expand their daily user base under 40. They want to make the experience feel more like a personal trainer and persuade users to continue to walk for an additional ten minutes. They gave our class the task to individually redesign their Ommetje app to reach these desired goals.

Research Insights

The Dutch brain foundation surveyed users from this target group who are no longer active and came to two main conclusions.

We recieved these conclusions and continued the project.

01

Users lost interest after top ranking

02

Users found the app quite boring and outdated feeling

Business Goals

Based on the debriefing and desired outcomes for the project I defined three business goals in order to have an overview of the goals this re-design needs to achieve.

01

Make the app feel more like a personal trainer/coach.

02

Have the users stay motivated to continue use of the app even if they are not top ranking.

03

Persuade users to continue walking for an additional 10 minutes.

Customer Journey

Due to the short time frame of the project and me never having used the app before, I created a customer journey based on the walking an ommetje section. This allowed me to have a clear idea of the section I was going to prioritise for the re-design. I was also able to have an overview of the journey the users have when using this part of the app and write ideas for diferrent types of improvement per screen.

User Flow

After creating the customer journey, I decieded to to make some small adjustments to the user flow of the walking an ommetje section. I did this in order to remove any actions that might distract the user during this section and ro remove any extra steps neccesary for the user so the focus stays on walking the ommetje.

Personality

For the personality of ommetje I focused on it giving the impression of being a friend who is always supportive, expressive and reliable.

This way I strive to make the user feel more familiar with app in a short period of time and creating a connection through the experience with the new personality of Ommetje.

I chose this personality type in order to extend the appeal of Ommetje to a large range of users.

The Script

For the personality of ommetje I focused on it giving the impression of being a friend who is always supportive, expressive and reliable.

This way I strive to make the user feel more familiar with app in a short period of time and creating a connection through the experience with the new personality of Ommetje.

I chose this personality type in order to extend the appeal of Ommetje to a large range of users.

Ideas and interactions

After decieding on the script and personality of the app I also like to make mind maps to generetane ideas for the re-design and see what directions I can take the design in. This also helps me for the next phase of the proces: wireframes

Sketches

These are wireframe sketches for the walk the ommetje section. I added some ideas from the overall ideation excercises and added them to these sketches to create the first building blocks fro my re-design.

UI Explained

Visual improvements

For this section I focused the most on look and feel and making a positive first impression by showcasing a minimal loading screen and then an overview of the stats that Ommetje provides.

I made the stats more visual and designed them in a visual hierarchy that’s easy to read and quick to read. This removes any confusion or distraction while highlighting the single goal on this screen: Start an Ommetje.

Overal Look and Voice

I redesigned the full look and feel of Ommetje. One of the insights was that the users felt like it was boring and outdated. I countered this by using a modern and clean UI design style with subtle shading and a monochrome palette to increase the appeal of the app.

The colours are based from the hersenstichting website and the green/blues are from the Ommetje app. By doing this, the redesign is still connected to the Dutch Brain Foundation

In conclusion

From this project I learned that by determining the personality and script prior to the design phase, I can also contribute to generating ideas because this is a different starting point than what I have done before.

In addition, I have also learned to set priorities within a project with a short time period in order to achieve an end result that meets the requested requirements. Finally, this also gave me the opportunity to focus on applying the theory for this assignment in my design choices for the user interface.
